The UCLG AFRICA is a continental organization with a unified and democratic structure. It provides the means for citizens from the villages, towns and cities across Africa to express themselves through their democratically elected representatives at the local level. It offers an edge between the African local people and the decision makers at the regional and continental stage. It carries the voice of African local governments to the world level through its participation to the work of the world organization of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and to international meetings and fora.
At the National level
The UCLG AFRICA supports the national associations of local governments in their dialogue with national governments on the implementation of decentralization policies and on the delivery of the mandates of local governments. Il also strives to implement a culture of accountability, good governance, and results-oriented behavior among the local governments authorities. For this end it provides a strong capacity building assistance to national associations and individual local governments (upon request)
At Continental Level
The UCLG AFRICA represents so far the united voice of African local governments through the Pan African Council of Local Governments which is the most important decision making structure of African local governments between the triennial meetings of the UCLG AFRICA General Assembly. It maintains regional offices in each of the African sub regions so that it can work closely with each of the five Regional Economic Communities of Africa.
At World Level
The UCLG AFRICA is the regional section for Africa of the World organization of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG). The 45 members of the UCLG AFRICA Pan African Council of Local Governments represent Africa on the World Council of UCLG (comprising 318 members). The 15 members of the UCLG AFRICA Executive Committee represent Africa on the UCLG World Executive Bureau (comprising 81 members).
